It has earned the reputation well. Catches the theme and mixes it with the mechanics wonderfully.

It may look very complicated at first glance, but it's not bad. The only cramped parts of a player turn is when combat happens and even that isn't bad compared to many others I own.

The players can technically attack each other if in the same zone, but I think it's often avoidable if one side doesn't want a part of it. You still get to combat each other since someone has to play the 'NPC' merchants, and naval vessels hunting pirates. I believe there is also some "gotcha" cards sprinkled in the decks.

The mission cards, and other similar card play, is what really pushes it beyond what similar games could offer. Aside from the typical Merchant or Pirate enterprises, these extra decks mix things up and offer rewards for some fun and heavily themed objectives.

I like. cheers

Been debating painting the ships but not sure if it's worth the time. They're not good sculpts. I had to file down some of the bottoms because they weren't flat (and some still tip over) if that's any indication of their sophistication. It would definitely look better even with some quickie paint jobs, I suppose, but they'll never be stunning. Plus I'd still have to color code them. Dunno about you but I enjoy doing the fine details on well sculpted minis whereas some of the basic cheapy ones in some board games don't look very enticing to work on.

Sounds pretty good! Nobody likes painting low quality minis, also having to color code them can be a pain.

I put in a pair of half-games with Polis.  Wasn't planning an AAR with this one.

The resource needs & expenditures really drive the game.  Which is a nice change from my usual War & Adventure games.  But since it's so economy focused, I found it difficult to get into as a solitaire enterprise because conflict didn't seem to be very advantageous.  Therefore I wasn't enticed to aggression, but rather scrambling for neutrals and trade routes the whole time.

What's more, it seemed like a simple oversight in resource management on the first turn could really crippled your faction and make you fall behind the rest of the game (hence the 2nd playthrough).  It tells me that you need to play multiple times before getting a full grasp of what's important and how to start off well.

I suppose the longest game would probably finally promote some warfare but there seems to be a long build-up in the first half of the game before really needing to attack enemy territory.

Polis is a good mix of Euro with a bit of wargame, but it turned out more Euro than I expected.  Probably far more enjoyable as the intended face-to-face two player game since there wasn't much narrative to make my solitaire learning experience more interesting.  I have another mixed Euro-Wargame title (Shogun from Queen Games) which I'll learn sometime in the next few months; it may have more "wargame" to it.

I'm hoping to play Pax Romana next.  A more specific wargame treatment of the classical Mediterranean powers (Republican Rome, Carthage, Greece/Macedonia, and Seleucids/Ptolemies).  There is a GMT reprint scheduled to hit the printers around July so I want to see whether I want the new edition or upgraded components for my older one.

I've wanted to try Pax Romana for awhile. I had a look at Shogun, thats a great looking game. I've always wanted to try GMT's Sekigahara. I love Japanese themed wargames. Probably because i played so much Shogun Total War. I've been wanting to get Cactus Air Force from GMT also since it has a high solitaire suitability. Tell me more about Pax Romana and Shogun after you've had a game with them. Suppose I could do with a few new wargames....

I'm not really sure when they're gonna print Cactus Air Force. I don't recall seeing any hard date set for it. GMT seems to be over their head on their P500 production schedule, being backed way the hell up. Crying or Very sad

I also recently acquired the latest Deluxe reprint of Great Battles Of Alexander and the Merchants & Marauders expansion. And a Federation Commander expansion. Pre-ordered the Super Dungeon Explore: Forgotten King set that has the new Co-op mode too. Can't keep up with my gaming acquisitions right now, need to push this stuff to the table sooner rather than later. pig

I agree, hopefully they will give us a date soon.

What do you think of Federation Commander? I'm a Star Trek fan so I was thinking about picking it up for that reason alone.

I've played the computer version of  Great Battles Of Alexander a long time ago. Don't remember much about it.

I used to own Starfleet Battles years ago, along with the wonderful PC versions (Starfleet Command 1-2 and the #3 offshoot).  Federation Commander is a big improvement in streamlining over SFB, but it's still heavy.  However, for ship-to-ship Star Trek combat, it's THE wargame to have.  I say "wargame" because it very much plays like older hex-based fighter combat games, but with more damage detail.

The real strength is that each race's vessels have their own tactical theme, and many have their own unique type of heavy weapon (in addition to a few types of phasers).

Keep in mind that it is only based on an alt-history version of Trek based on the original series.  Where the Federation isn't quite so much the peace-loving space hippies they are in later series and there are reguar wars breaking out between the different empires.

Marco, a wargamer (and professor IIRC) did a recent YouTube review on it:

I've played the computer version of  Great Battles Of Alexander a long time ago. Don't remember much about it.

The computer version is based on the same system, albeit an older version.  The computer version was added to GOG a couple years ago.  Actually it's the Great Battles Collector's Edition which not only includes Alexander but also the Hannibal, and Caesar versions.  One of my favorite wargame ports, although I've been getting an occasional CTD with Alexander, so Hannibal gets more play time lately.

I also have a few of the Ancient Warfare series PC games from HPS.  They're good but I have a few complaints about certain playability aspects.

I have a few GBoH tabletop titles.  Alexander, Chariots of Fire, Ran, and Hoplite.  Haven't played most of them yet, but I do like the system and definitely plan on diving into some of the various battles before long.  Got some good variety as far as setting goes.

As usual, more games than time. santa

I ordered Federation Commander Academy. I thought it might be a cool thing to read and try out a bit when I travel in a few weeks. Thanks for the link to Great Battles Collectors Edition. Will be buying that to play. These hex wargames would be fantastic for tablets.

There are a few of the old John Tiller/HPS hex & counter style PC wargames ported to Android (and maybe iNazis).

I have one of the Modern Campaigns (Mideast '67) and their free Modern Air Power and Quang Tri '72 on my Kindle Fire, although I've not tried them yet.  I generally just use my Kindle for reading.  Not sure what type of tablet you have but you can find that stuff on Google Play too, I'm sure.

They also have other series like Panzer Campaigns and Civil War Battles available.

Already have some of the full version Modern Campaigns, Panzer Campaigns, and Civil War stuff, which those are a small ported version of, on my laptop. So that's where I've always played them.  Especially with some of the graphical mods for map & units.

I was interested in those John Tiller games you mentioned until I saw the price. I might pick one up anyway since I need some games that aren't to graphic intensive for my aging laptop. I have a kindle fire so maybe going with those free versions are best.

That Tiller engine is so olde, it's spelled with an "E" on the end.  I think it was originally created in the mid 90s and each new series just added or modified mechanics to suit the era.

They can run on Pentium IIs. Laughing  You're old laptop is probably just fine.  Well.. except for the Ancient Warfare series, which is a heavily modified one from a different programmer.  I'd recommend starting with the old Great Battles Collection from GOG rather than that one because the AW series from HPS can be rather unwieldy.  But the Modern & Panzer Campaign series, Squad Battles series, etc, will run on just about any Windows machine from the past decade and a half.

Also.. you can get a physical copy of some of those John Tiller wargames from "NWS Online" store.  I believe they stopped selling through their Yahoo store and went Ebay only, but should be easier to find that way.  I picked up a few of the Squad Battles and Ancient Warfare series from them and saved almost $20 per title.  Also got a disk version and the latest updates from the HPS site (not the other JTS site) removes the old CD check DRM.  The newer JTS site has some online activation bullshit so I'm not picking anything up there.

Thinking of Federation Commander, I fired up the old Starfleet Command 2: Empires At War again.  That's the PC port of tabletop Star Fleet Battles.  Love it! Very Happy   I found the "Community Edition" floating around for d/l out there; I think it has some extra random mission types & such modded in.

I really wish someone would do a newer version of this, complete with the 'Dynaverse' multiplayer campaign.

Dynaverse.net is definitely the host.  They've been the primary source for SFC stuff for ages.

The version I have is a slightly older Beta that I downloaded a year or two ago.  Dunno how much more was done since then.  It tended to crash when an enemy ship exploded, using my laptop's Nvidia card, but seems to run just fine when I force it to use the onboard Intel graphics (oddly enough).  Not sure how will this Beta runs on my desktop gfx.

I still have the old SFC2 disk from 2000 (and the amazing manual) stashed away somewhere, but I wanted to try out the modded one.  I may have to purchase the release version of the 'Community Edition' if they've improved it since the version I have.

EDIT:  The look of the ships from this era has always been my favorite.  The ones from the movies with the original cast.  Get to fly the cool stuff like Reliant and Excelsior-class, and other similar looking ships like the Bird Of Prey and D7.  Plus it has all the SFB races in SFC2 so there is much variety, especially if you set your game campaign to Middle or Late Era due to many class variants. pirat

The ships from TNG and on just lost some of their personality IMO. They all ended up looking like half-melted slugs instead of having the sharp distinctive lines.

Ok cool. I'll pick it up and try it out. Hopefully post a video on it soon too. I agree the early ships look really cool especially the Klingon D7s and stuff. The only TNG ship I really liked was that green Romulan Warbird.

Same.

Some of the Romulan ships definitely looked better, I agree.

There was an old tabletop game from FASA, called Star Trek Starship Tactical Combat Simulator, that came out mid-80s. It was pretty much a cut down & streamlined Star Fleet Battles type system featuring that movie era of ships. The Romulan ships in that one looked amazing (and rather bird-like). The mechanics heavily favored photon torpedoes, and the Federation ships were overpowered compared to the others, but it was still fun.

FASA also offered miniatures for that game. I recall ogling the full color sales sheet showing all of them, as a kid. I couldn't afford them but they were gorgeous. From what I've seen on the 'net, the minis are still highly sought after all these years later.

The file they sent me for the game seems to be corrupted, I can't burn it to a CD or mount it with iso program. I've used iso many times before so I don't know if I'm just missing something or what. Anyway I sent them an email about it. Hopefully they get back soon.

Apparently the iso only works with a particular iso program. They told me to try MagicISO and that worked no problem. For some reason the other 6 iso programs I tried gave me an error.

Some more "on the table" stuff from the past week or two..

Painting hasn't progressed much on SDE, still some odds & ends left to do on these original three characters but I wanted to check out the solitaire mode.

The gauntlet run is now set up. Realized that my VonDrakk Manor set is missing two of the 'critter' skeleton class (only got 4 of the 6, not shown). Time to send off an email. :-\

After getting my ass handed to me in Xenoshyft..
