I want to fly with Dukely

Post by SeaLord on Tue Nov 04, 2014 12:13 pm

I want to fly with Dukely and the gang in Rise of Fight. One small problem though, I need to buy the game and set up my computer and all that.

I used to play Red Baron and I have read virtually every book on World War I and World War II air combat. I can identify almost all World War I aircraft on sight, so there should be only a marginal risk of me accidentally shooting down a friendly plane. I may run into a few, but that is another matter entirely--those head-on attacks can get a bit dicey at the last second.

How do I get started?

Thanks.

First decision would be whether you want to run, and purchase aircraft for, the game client from the studio's website or the Steam version.

You can play both versions online together. But if you plan to buy extra aircraft beyond the first pair of free planes, and you probably will if you're gonna be flying online, then you'll want to decide on which marketing method to use.

With the company's own client, the SPAD XIII and Albatros D.Va is free. After that you will have to purchase individual aircraft at anywhere from $7 to $15 apiece and each of their specific equipment add-ons and other stuff separately for more.

The Steam ROF client costs $50 up front but you get 10 aircraft from the start, along with the extra Channel Map. It also groups the rest of the aircraft available for purchase into packages of four aircraft that also come with ALL their optional equipment add-ons (I notably require the engine temp gauge) for $25 a pop.

I waffled for a long time about picking up ROF because I hadn't been playing flight sims in awhile when it first came out. Finally jumped when it hit Steam and they offered the big DLC packages (at sale price!) so it was much more affordable for picking up most everything that way. I've seen sales every once in awhile on all ROF stuff, and you can expect it all to be 50% Off on the Christmas sale and quite possibly the November sale. They also occasionally offer store-wide sales for the developer client too, if you only want to pick & choose a few flyables for use in that client.

Thanks, I am going to start shopping. The Steam ROF client sounds good.

Hello and wlecome! It sounds like Nefaro has helped you decide where to get RoF. Are you building a new pc? or just ordering flight gear?

Besides that you should introduce yourself in the the Multiplayer Project section and look in the Roster section and make a pilot to use when your online.

Welcome!
i´m an old Red Baron fan mysef  ;=)

In terms of getting started, the steam version is fine, albeit my personal preference is the "normal" one because of the modularity and not needing to run steam.. but that is also a bit of personal taste., the Steam version is a very starter friendly set, but you cannot "handpick" the content you want as in the other version.. and also important: you can not recieve gifted planes and so on.

overall there is no "feelable" difference between the versions, it is virtually the same programe but just the way you can get other content is different... In Steam it comes in "packs" and in the normal version you just pick what you like. For both versions there are sales, which greatly reduce cost. On steam, new planes (if new planes ever come) are mostly not "imiatly" available due to the "package" deal, while in the normal version you can even pre-order those.

in terms of hardware, track-IR has really improved dukleys flying a lot ;=), but cheap guys like me still stick to the coolie hat, which is less optimal but still works. WW1 planes need a lot of rudder, and so rudder pedals are really awesome to have, but the cheap alternative which isn´t too bad (I´d say you can fly precise with it) are those sticks with a rudder on the throttle (like "black widow" or "impact" from speedlink.. those are best money/controlability ones in the cheap end, imho)

Rof really is fun, it has some awesome sides and some not so awesome sides..

when you get started, you got to realize that some of the planes are really really well done with a great feeling of flight and complex flight dynamics modeled, while others are quite a bit "ufo"-esque with the right settings. One of the weaker points, is the AI unfortunatly, thats why playing with other people makes the game quite a lot more fun..  For a singleplayer career mode, there is an free mod/addon that many like: Pat Wilsons Campaign generator.. (see homepage/ usefull stuff)

but ultimatly for me the fun is in multiplayer, flying together. And thats what I deeply recomend.

one thing though, it is very common, that singleplayer players come to MP with a bit of a wrong idea, because fighting the ai tends to teach you tactics that are good against the ai, but very bad against players...

a good tip online is, especially in the planes like the Se5 or the Albi, is to put your wealth into the bank... ie: resist the urge to just turn behind your enemy... Especially to just dive in and flatturn behind your oppent.. spending energy like that gets you killed quick and most other planes turn better.. and turning at high speed after a dive or so is always bad... as turn radius and speed are directly related, the faster the wider, the harder you pull, the more energy loss...

Instead pull up to convert speed to altitude (energy in the bank) then change directions and go after your enemy while getting faster in  a dive again..  but while the lerning curve seems steep at first, a Red Baron player should be able to quickly get into the game..

have a look here, if you eventually feel a bit rusty on those energy fighting tactics, bfm etc...

Dukely--My system specs meet the requirement, except I had to buy a graphics card. I am getting Track IR, a flight stick and throttle and rudder pedals (so I can try some side slips and stuff). It is going to take a few days for the stuff to arrive and then I have set everything up. I will go to the Multiplayer Project section to introduce myself.

DrZebra--Thanks for the tips. I am sure I will get killed a few times before I really get the hang of it.

the usual stuff to fight that is:

a)terminate all other non-used aplications!
b) check up-to-date grafic card drivers
c) tune the graphics options down until it runs better. for instance taking the grass out and setting the tree quality to low as well as forrest visibility helps a lot while doing little damage to the games look.
(I run at really low specs, I should know!)

Hockey? Yeah I like hockey, I don't watch sports very often however.

My favorite plane hmm... I really like Albies and Noops. Bristols are also a lot of fun to fly.
