IL2: Battle of Stalingrad

Post by Nefaro on Mon Nov 03, 2014 4:41 pm

Not necessarily a suggestion, but I didn't know where else to put it.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/307960/

Learning BoS on the 'Normal' noob mode right now.  WW2 is probably my least played flight sim era so learning the engine management stuff will probably take me some time.

Meanwhile, still having fun.  Despite the content being a bit thin at the moment (and release day DLC Mad  ) it is pretty damn immersive.  You can easily see the updated ROF engine.  The flight & damage modelling is superb for the most part and the sound is still excellent.  I think the players are still waiting on the Mission Editor  (and some extra server tools?) so I think the multi-player missions may still be rather basic.  Nevertheless, I think much of the ROF multi-player population is over on the BOS servers lately.

Some screenies of my German fails and the Stalingrad weenie roast..

Looks like a great game! Can't get into it right now since its got a big price tag. Maybe it will go on sale on steam this holiday.

Also moved this to the new IL-2 Section.

I dunno if it'll be on sale this holiday season, since it was just released. Sad

Don't fret though, it still needs some more content development for both multi-player and single-player.  So it may be best to wait until that's all sorted.  They don't even plan to have the Mission Editor out for a few weeks still, so I doubt the cool community content will be out for a little while.  Plus the server hosting options, amongst other things.  That's a must IMO since I had two fookeen jackanapes quit the multi-player server after I finally got on their tail and they couldn't escape.  Disappeared right in front of me! There's only a 5 second disconnect wait after choosing to exit the server, and you can still keep their score/points when they re-enter.  Too exploitable. Evil or Very Mad

Wow that is very dishonorable. That does need to be fixed. I don't know if I would even play multiplayer, maybe if some of you guys wanted to fly together we could try it.

It uses the ROF engine and the developers are pretty much the same (with some extras).  So I hope they get it as filled out as ROF eventually, or nearly so.  The core flight sim is a great experience, just needs some of the peripheral content and server options added.

Something for the distant future, perhaps, if it gets there.

Yes I knew it was 777 studios, so i figured it would be similar. Next week I will be able to get it so maybe it will have had a few patches done by then.

I don't think the editor is due to be released until December. That's probably overly optimistic, even.

Just be aware that it doesn't have a proper Career Mode like the one in ROF (or some other sims).

Oh is that so? What a shame would be great if I got one eventualy. I still have high hopes for Ilya Moruments. That will likely have a career mode. Its going to have better AI as well and hopefully the career will have some more features.

I've not even checked it out.  Already have Wings Over Flanders Fields for the best single-player Career Mode out there.

Despite the game engine being a heavily modded older one, the campaign environment contains all the flights in one huge section of the front going about their own missions.  So it's more of a living world as opposed to ROF/BOS's method of spawning one just outside of your sighting range (or de-spawning  Mad  ), at some predictable spots along your route.  You never know what you'll run across in WOFF, even if you venture off the beaten path.  The AI pilots also have personalities, so some are rookies who tend to try and run if they think you're getting the upper hand and others are actual historical aces who will put you to the test (quite a few with their historical aircraft skins too).  I just wish we could have all that single-player campaign awesomeness in a sim with ROF's level of flight and damage modelling.  Would be superb.  But maybe that's wishing for too much awesome in one package.

IL-2 Battle Of Stalingrad now has a Pat Wilson Campaign Generator!

I'm sure it's still a work in progress, but that's a pretty big mod addition to a game that ships with minimal single-player features.
