Anyone interested in playing a turn-based wargame, team vs. team?

Post by SeaLord on Mon Jun 22, 2015 5:32 am

I have been playing a lot of Mount and Blade Napoleonic, and I thought it might be fun to play a turn-based wargame, team vs. team. I think the Napoleonic period would be fun, since there are so many different unit types and formations, but I would be interested in playing just about any turn-based wargame. I suppose that we would have to play by e-mail, or something.

Is anyone else interested? Any games to suggest?

I'm interested! I'll play whatever, I'm sure we could get Nefaro interested as well.

I don't have any particular game in mind. Any suggestions?

I don't really know of any play by e-mail games off the top of my head. I'll look some up and see what I find.

Do you have any tabletop wargames? If we have one in common we could set them up and play via email/messages. I've also been looking around the web for some games too, and have found only a few. I might try looking at some games on Steam, they sometimes will have a play by email component.

Sorry didn't answer right away, I have been busy--work and all that. Tabletop games--no, I only have a few old Avalon Hill bookcase games (basically as collector items). I used to play HPS Simulation games, but I gave them away. I know people don't have a lot of money to spend too. Matrix Games used to have a few old games available for free--e.g., Pacific War, War in Russia. But the choices are limited.

So you mean something like Axis and Allies or Diplomacy?

I stopped playing Diplomacy at age 11 when I was hoodwinked by some older players into allowing one of my armies to be convoyed to Murmansk. That's right, I was fooled by the old Murmansk Run ploy. The player playing Russia was not amused. The convoy lifeline promptly disappeared, I received none of the promised support and my supply centers were all seized by players who convinced me into ordering my army to Murmansk. To this day I am bitter about the whole experience. I met one of those guys with the convoy idea today, I wouldn't get him a glass of water if he was on fire.

The game Diplomacy has no dice, it is about trust and betrayal. As you said in one of your old posts, friendships have been destroyed playing Diplomacy. I like the element of randomness and chance (i.e., dice) in games, then I always have an excuse for my gullibility and stupidity--"Gee, the dice are just not rolling my way today!"

I could try something like Axis and Allies, but I have never played Axis and Allies, so I would probably be a push over.

I have seen fights break out over Diplomacy. It is certainly an interesting game in respects to human interaction. Anyway, I've played Axis and Allies in the past over a pbem system with some friends, I'm a strong player so if you want we can take the axis and I can find some people to take the allies. Sorry for the late response on this. Heres a link to the site: http://gamesbyemail.com/ Its called WWII to avoid copyright Razz If i remember correctly all I need is your email to invite you to a game. Anyway take a look and let me know.

I am an Associate Member of the Virginia Bar, so I have to watch my P's and Q's with regard to copyrights or they will shackle me to a piano and throw me in the ocean. I will check out the site. I saw you playing Gateway to Caen, maybe we can play that mano a mano.

I'm sorry to hear you were sick. I hope you are all better now. I'm sorry too about not responding right away. I have been playing a lot of War Thunder tanks and all the other everyday things in life seem to take all my other time. I will try to check the forum more often. It is probably easier to reach me by sending a message to me through Youtube or Steam. I will look at Gateway to Caen. I have Mount and Blade, War Thunder, and that World War I squad game (I forget the name--hard to play) and some other games too.

Man... Mount & Blade Napoleonic is so much fun.  There are always some hilarious moments.  If you guys ever want to start teaming up for some of the mayhem, then let me know. It's one of those games I regularly come back to.

As for PBEM wargames, I have quite a few.  But I rarely do PBEM since the games tend to drag out so long, and end up more like a daily chore sometimes when they do.  The monster stuff like War In The Pacific or War In The East is just out the window since it would probably take years to get anywhere.  Not to mention the learning curve. Neutral

Some of the 4X hex-based digital games seem to be a popular compromise for this sort of thing, that can be played in live sessions.  Such as Warlock 1/2, Age Of Wonders 3, etc.

I'd also suggest using Vassal, using a real wargame.  But not all of the tabletop games have Vassal modules.  I just got GMT's Genesis in last month, and it would be an excellent grand strategy wargame for up to 5 players, but there's no Vassal module for it yet (as an example).

Hey, just wanted to mention to you guys I found a pretty cool little game on Steam called Colonial Conquest which has multiplayer and might be fun.
