Wargames On The Table

Post by Nefaro on Thu Apr 02, 2015 2:53 am

Broke out my first game of A Most Dangerous Time.

Turn 6 (end of 1572) - Takeda Shingen musters his armies on the weak backside of the Oda Alliance, while their armies are fighting in the west, with an eye for Tokugawa's home castle.  Tokugawa has been rushing back, after some early action against Azai and Ikko Ikki, but he still needs more reinforcement.

Oda Nobunaga and his various generals had been briefly pushed out of Kyo but recently surged back through.  He has the various enemy alliances on the ropes, but with Takeda's entry there will be some tough decisions now that it's become a two front conflict.  Even worse, the Mori alliance will also join the war against Oda soon.

Enjoing AMDT despite some rules clarification/errata and a few misprinted counters (only relating to set-up indicators on them).

The movement system, chit draws, and betrayal mechanics make for interesting changes in the situation.  A personally modified "Good Fortune" rule gives some insurance against repeatedly bad chit draws but limits it to one use per turn between both players so it's gives some value to saving it for the right time.

Even in only the first six turns, the fortunes have see-sawed a couple times.

Awesome! This game looks so sweet! Japanese history is so interesting. I've wanted to get Sekigahara for awhile.

I did enjoy AMDT for a 2-player wargame.  It's not terribly steep regarding rules, although the translation from the original Japanese was still a bit confusing in some places and took regular referencing for a bit.  That's almost normal these days, however.

I also picked up another Multi-Man Publishing wargame, Kingdom Of Heaven, featuring numerous campaigns from the Crusades.  Uses it's own system, but has some similarities in scope and general style.

These MMP wargamers are rather pricey for the size, but the component quality is pretty good for paper & cardboard wargames.

I would also like to get GMT's Sekigahara.  The P500 reprint has been up for awhile but I haven't quite committed to it yet.  Even if it passed the 500 pre-order mark, and the reprint announced tomorrow, we still probably wouldn't see it for another year or more judging by how backed up GMT is with those.

Speaking of GMT's P500s.  They just charged my card for Genesis and sent an email about it heading to the printer right now.  santa

So many good looking wargames out now. I only alone myself to buy a few a year, otherwise I wouldn't be able to move around my house. Let me know what you think of Genesis its looks quite good. I like this AMDT game too, I'll have to get a game on the table soon.

I should definitely reduce my game purchasing, especially since the unplayed ones are starting to pile up higher. I also plan on moving in a couple years, which will be a nightmare as it is.
