Chit/Counter Trays

Post by Dukely on Wed Jan 21, 2015 6:10 am

I've been playing Bloody April a lot recently, the thing thats slowing me down is having to go through little bags searching for counters. I was reading about chit trays, think I'm gonna pick some up. Any recommendations? People speak highly of both the Chessex and GMT trays. Also best place to buy cheap?

You may have seen this already, but here it is.  A thread by gamers about chit trays:

Yep, I've read a few threads already. I was just curious about what any of you guys might use.

For Bloody April, I used a pair of DVG "Deep Dish" counter trays IIRC.  I also use the regular sized GMT ones with the so-called "Bookcase" size boxes such as those used in many GMT games.

However, if box size permits, I prefer to use plastic bead storage boxes from my local Hobby Lobby.  This is the case with many of my boardgames with lots of pieces that go in & out of it while playing the game.  They're basically just an inexpensive little snap-shut tackle box with lots of cells to separate stuff in.  I believe they're like $1.49 or $2.00 apiece at my local store and work as well as the small Plano tackle boxes some people use.  Although I keep some small Planos too, just because they have moveable inserts, for use with the odd game that has especially elongated cardboard pieces.

The bead storage boxes have been a huge help in setting up games like the excellent Mage Knight Board Game because I can draw the pieces right out of the box, after mixing the randomized groups up and putting them back in.  No dumping out baggies of pieces and separating them into bowls or piles; just take the plastic box out of the game box and open the lid - ready to go!

This is the exact one I get, but you can find them at most craft stores.

Looks like they raised the price by a dollar recently.  No surprise.. my local one seemed to be selling them by the truckload with a big end-cap full of them.  Or the online one is just more expensive than the local in-store price.

The Plano boxes don't come with enough dividers to create as many dividers as these have, and the corners of the top of their compartments are sharper (I've skinned myself a couple times with the Planos).

I'm pretty sure this jewelry/bead box fits into the big Bloody April game box but I wanted many more smaller compartments in the same area so I used counter trays instead, with that game.
