17/1/2015 OPTIONAL INFORMAL TRAINING AND/OR OPERATIONAL SORTIE

Post by SeaLord on Fri Jan 16, 2015 1:19 am

Available pilots meet at 1650 UTC in the Dukely forum chat box for a 1700 takeoff for OPTIONAL INFORMAL TRAINING AND OR OPERATIONAL SORTIE. Other pilots may link up with pilots already in the air at any time thereafter. My thoughts are we should not wear ourselves out on Saturday, so if we fly, let's keep it light. The "main event" is on Sunday--THE SYNDICATE VINTAGE MISSION--and pilots need to be well-rested for Sunday sorties.

This is what each member who answered the roll call reported as his availability for a Saturday(please correct me if I am wrong):

Dukely: 1800-2100 UTC
GenMarkof007: 2000-Until He Has to Quit UTC
Sealord: 1500-Until He Has to Quit UTC
DrZebra: 1700-2000 Until He Has to Quit UTC
Nefaro: Undetermined UTC/As Availability Presents Itself
Tailmange: As of Posting Has Not Answered Roll Call/Unknown, But is Expected to Fly as Usual.

As of posting, all other pilots have not answered roll call.

I believe the best way to contact each other online once flying starts may be through the in-game chat or Steam friends messages (although I am still experimenting with the latter). To coordinate the initial meeting--let's plan to meet on the chat here at 1650 UTC for a 1700 takeoff. Anyone that misses the initial link up on chat, should be able to find those in-game easily enough through the in-game chat.

As usual, all pilots should use profiles with the prefix *DD* before the rest of the name.

If there are any questions, problems, or suggestions about this, please start a message thread for the airing of grievances.

I'll try to make it. I have an errand to run that day so hopefully I'll be back in time.

Not sure what's going on this weekend, but I'll probably drop in at some points even if I happen to miss the initial run-up.

I'll be on as the game starts at 1630 and will most likely be on til I get bored . . . so about 2200-0000 hours

Voice comms in TS3...

Post by GenMarkof007 on Sun Jan 18, 2015 5:11 am

Hi Guys,

Don't forget that the DD channels in TS3 need the password to have all upercase...
Let me know by PM if you have problems connecting inside the DD rooms.

You need to enter the password for the server first, and not our SQUAD password.

Cheers

Thanks to everyone who participated in the OPTIONAL INFORMAL TRAINING AND/OR OPERATIONAL SORTIE held today (17/1/2015).

There was some good formation flying and we got a few squadron attacks in on some unfortunate pilots who happened to be in our path. As a reminder, the general purpose of training is to learn to fight as a unit and bring massed squadron firepower to bear on a target. That means good coordination, disciplined formation tactics, and just getting to understand each other's moves in advance.

Of course, there are areas where improvements can be made. On the squadron bounce, we tend to get tangled up with too many friendlies on the target. The result is, predictably, friendly-friendly mid-air collisions. Hold your hand up if you are guilty (I am holding my hand up). We need to work out a better system where the plane that has the best shot makes the attack while the others support or loiter to become the best plane with a shot. I would like to use 2-plane "elements" and 4-plane flights (finger four formation) and associated tactics. I think that might help sort things out in the air.

I would like to have DrZebra's opinion of the exercise too, since he has a lot of experience.

Thanks again!

*Holds up hand* Broke off my attack and climbed right into Sealord, at least I think it was. Anyway got my first MP kill in that server. I know it was on easy mode so I still need to improve. It was mostly luck as he attacked directly into me and a single burst sent him down.

If I´m honest, we fared partly pretty poorly. But that is ok, as otherwise it would also be a unsporting to fly with unbalanced sides and in the end it is about having fun. And learning a bit more every time...

on quick and dirty-action servers ettiquette isn´t soo important, but I would apreciate it, if all could be nice enough online when fighting other players as to salute after a good fight (and thus give a name to who did what) and letting shot down players crash in peace (with icons on, no icon means shot down..) which is also a tactical move, as any giving up hight to get last bullets in groundbound planes is only make oneself a target.

So, what are the reasons I´d rate our performance on?

formation flying: was good. but could be more cohesive. I especially think that this minute to circle and wait for mates who are behind one is never wasted.

Situational awareness: this was a server with icons on (press i) and outside the identification range, you see at least a small black x... so no excuses for not seeing situations, as the direction from which the small black x aproaches is a good clue if it is friend or foe.. We where once cought by a triplane goind high directly above us... THAT should never happen.

also: don´t turnfight in Se5s against Fokker Dr.1s unless you want to train that and are prepared to lose. I did see a lot off two fast turning after diving in. Tight turns at high speeds mean an enormous loss of energy and thus your death. If you must infight: Learn what a high yoyo is: Pull up, store energy in the altitude bank, change direction cheap, and withdraw from the bank in a dive again.

genMarkov was actually shooting well, probably the only one of us (I am a poor fighter pilot because I can fly but I shoot really really bad..), but insisting of taking bombs on a hit-n-run fighter is only wise if your priorty is ONE quick strafing run. But when you want to do that, communication of that intention is wise...

Let´s soon fly again.

Look how great I am! Oh, no wait! Avert your eyes! I automatically go into turnfights since I fly noops the most. I did realize it however and started climbing to get behind the enemy.

Formation flying is a bit hard for now, since I don't have yet my TrackIR, and I'm using keyboard, mouse and joystick to play/fly.
But was fun to try and stay in formation and at the same time find some bandits! Wink

Hope today will go better.
Thanks DrZebra on the tips for the SE5s and DR1. Wink

Cheers

I got in a bad turn fight with a Dr.I at low level. Actually, I was just trying not to get shot.
